The Buzzer

Our boys have never been late sleepers – helpful on school days, not so much on weekends or vacations. But I decided with the time change, I might have the opportunity to have them go to bed later and sleep a little later. The first night, they slept until 9:00 (unheard of at home), and might have slept later if it weren’t for the buzzer. The apartment has a button down on street level to be let in, and it is a rude awakening (literally) when you are sound asleep. This morning…repeat. Today it didn’t happen until 9:30, but once again, we were all sound asleep and shot up in bed at the sound of the buzzer. We were going to place bets on whether it would happen again tomorrow, but I can’t get anyone to take the opposite side of the bet. We’re all convinced it will be a daily occurrence.

Today was a busy day, and we made up for our poor timing yesterday. First we went to Castel Sant’Angelo, which the kids loved. It was built between 130-139 AD, originally as a mausoleum and later converted to a fortress, and is full of arrow slits, cannons, and what the boys were convinced were once trap doors.

Then we had a wonderful lunch at Sorpasso – a wine bar with really great food, that is not too far from the Vatican. The kids are not always very understanding as I’m dragging them past restaurant after restaurant, in search of the one I have researched. I explained to them today that since we are typically eating only one meal out per day, it’s important to me that it be delicious. We’ll see if they remember tomorrow!

After lunch, we visited St. Peter’s. Carter loved it, and couldn’t wait to see exactly where Jeffrey and I were engaged, but I think Max was too tired to appreciate it, and made it hard for the rest of us to appreciate it either. Curse you buzzer! Carter did get the obligatory postcard from the Vatican, a Pope Francis stamp, and mailed it via the official Vatican post. Jeffrey: keep a look out for it in the mail!

I think tomorrow we might take a break from the cobblestone, and hit the park.

Buona notte.
